Responsible Retail Beats Performative Restriction
A responsible system does not hide from enforcement. It asks government to inspect, publish results, and separate compliant sellers from illegal ones.
The better policy posture
Alberta does not have to choose between youth protection and responsible adult access. It can require real age checks, publish inspection results, and act against sellers operating outside the legal system.
The problem with performative restriction is that it can look strong while leaving the hardest part untouched: illegal supply that does not ask for ID, does not collect tax, and does not follow product standards.
A responsible retail package
- mandatory refusal-of-sale training refreshers;
- clear penalties for repeat legal-channel failures;
- visible enforcement against unlicensed sellers;
- public reporting by region and channel;
- adult access review before product categories are removed.
Responsible policy should reward the visible channel for being accountable, not hand more demand to sellers who stay invisible.
