Complaint Follow-Through Is the Responsible Policy Test
Responsible policy should publish what happens after a complaint is made, not just what conduct is prohibited.
The missing middle
Alberta says its Tobacco and Vaping Enforcement Team inspects retailers, provides education, coordinates enforcement, and responds to public complaints, according to Alberta rules and enforcement. The public should also see what happens after those complaints are filed.
The responsible reporting model
- Complaint received.
- Channel identified: retail, online, informal, or unknown.
- Response assigned.
- Outcome reported in aggregate.
- Repeat pattern flagged for enforcement.
A better debate
A responsible coalition can support youth protection and adult access at the same time. The bridge between those goals is transparent follow-through.
